Hancock Shaker Village
Imagine learning at one of the of the most significant
Shaker communities in America, highlighted by the famous ‘round stone barn’
in the beautiful Berkshire section of Massachusetts. The facilities and the
location are a perfect venue for exploring one’s life purpose and developing
practical skills. The former Shaker community became a museum and learning
center in 1960. The Shakers were the
longest-lived utopian community in American history, with a presence that
spanned three centuries, beginning at the very birth of our nation.
Some of the practices embraced by the Shakers in the 18th or 19th centuries were well ahead of their time: women holding leadership positions equal to men, new ways to sustain health and vitality, applying their values of justice, equality, tolerance and community in everyday life, a deep commitment to what we would today call “sustainability”, The Shakers brought a meaningful sense of purpose and a capacity for beauty and simplicity to agriculture, medicine, design and many other areas of everyday life at a simpler time in America. We will benefit from the Shaker’s values and history, and understand why they passed from the scene, as we explore our life’s purpose, reconnect with the land and develop the capacity to achieve our deep desire to create a better world. |
Inn at Shaker Mill FarmThe Inn at the Shaker Mill Farm is an informal place in the country, on the New
York side of the lovely Berkshire hills in the town of Canaan, NY. It was originally built in 1824 as a gristmill, by members of the Shaker religion who settled this area about two hundred years ago. Purchased in 1966, the mill has been lovingly rebuilt by the innkeeper. Those who cherish the gentle joys of leisure may find us to their liking. It’s homey and welcoming and operated by someone whose idea of hospitality runs more to sharing moods than to putting on airs. The Inn is just fifteen minutes west of Lenox, Massachusetts, and Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony. Copyright © 2011 The Inn at the Shaker Mill Farm Inc. |
